DesignCraft: downloads & layout guide

This guide covers the DesignCraft publishing application from ArtCraft, not a similarly named company or design service. Its purpose is arranging text and artwork across pages: think a booklet, magazine spread or multipage handout.

The useful starting point

Official builds are available, but the repository still labels its roadmap stage pre-alpha. Test a small layout and its exported file before moving an existing publication.

Source-based guidance checked October 11, 2026. We have not installed DesignCraft or tested its layout interchange, typography or print output.

Choose it for a page-layout task

ArtCraft describes DesignCraft with spreads, parent pages, text frames, linked stories, paragraph and character styles, swatches and text wrap. Its repository also documents IDML interchange and PDF, PNG and EPUB exports. These are project-published capabilities to check in the build you select.

A page-layout app handles the relationships between pages, frames and flowing text. It is not the same job as retouching pixels in PhotoCraft or reorganizing completed PDFs in PdfCraft. Preparing an image in one tool and placing it into a layout is a sensible task boundary, provided the exported image format works in both.

Download status has changed

Earlier discovery notes described DesignCraft as in development. At this check, its official page offers launcher and standalone downloads, and GitHub lists v0.6.0 as the latest release. Available packages and a pre-alpha development stage can both be true.

Use the official product page to identify the project, then the release page for a specific package and its checksum. If you choose a source build or command-line archive, follow the repository instructions; those are different entry points from the desktop installer.

Evaluate one two-page layout

Use a short text you own, one licensed image and fonts installed on your computer. Make a two-page document with a heading, body style, page number and two linked text frames. Use enough body text to cross from the first frame into the second.

Edit the body style, add another paragraph and move the image near the text. Check whether the story still flows in the intended order and whether overset text is visible. Then save, close and reopen the native document. These actions expose different failure modes from merely displaying a sample magazine.

Export a PDF to a new filename. In an independent viewer, inspect line breaks, page dimensions, selectable text, missing glyphs and the final image. Keep a reference PDF and screenshots so a later update can be compared with the same document.

  • Fonts: confirm substitutions, character coverage and embedding in the delivered PDF.
  • Text: inspect line breaks, frame order, columns, wrap and overset text.
  • Pages: compare page count, dimensions, folios and parent-page elements.
  • Output: reopen the PDF in the recipient’s viewer; inspect at the required zoom and print size.

Treat layout interchange as a separate test

The repository lists IDML import and export. That is not proof that every InDesign document will round-trip intact, or that a native INDD file can be opened directly. Establish the actual import option first, using a duplicate and an export from the source application when necessary.

Compare fonts, linked images, anchored objects, parent pages, styles, tables and page geometry. Save and reopen the imported copy, then inspect the output back in the receiving tool. Record partial support by feature instead of giving the entire file a universal compatibility score.

For commercial print, ask the printer which PDF preset, color profile, bleed and marks are required. Match those requirements to a verified export from your build. A product page’s print-ready description does not replace a preflight of the actual deliverable.

When to keep evaluating

A copied newsletter or small personal booklet is a useful trial. A long publication with strict font, accessibility or print requirements needs a larger representative test. Keep the original source files and the established export path until the operations your publication depends on have passed.
